How the Character Credit System Works
ElevenLabs charges per character of input text, not per minute of audio output. Every character in your script — letters, spaces, punctuation — counts toward your monthly allowance. A 1,000-character text costs 1,000 characters regardless of whether it generates 55 seconds or 90 seconds of audio (speaking pace affects duration, not character cost).
Credits reset at the start of each billing cycle. Unused characters don't roll over to the next month. If your workflow is sporadic — heavy one month, light the next — you're effectively subsidising ElevenLabs on your light months. Plan sizing should reflect your heaviest regular use, not your average.
Regenerating audio costs the same characters as generating it the first time. If you generate a 1,500-character script and regenerate it three times before you're happy, you've spent 6,000 characters. On the free plan, this matters. On Creator and above, regeneration costs become negligible.
